I am so proud that I get to work with an amazing diversity of non-profit organizations here in Boston that are really making a difference and changing the world. This is so important to me. In fact, before I became a photographer, I worked in the non-profit sector for years, passionately organizing communities for social change. Now, I have my own way of helping out these important causes: by making them excellent storytelling photos that highlight their work, their impact, and their mission.
This was the case on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2017, when Project Citizenship hired me to photograph one of their citizenship workshops. This is a non-partisan organization, of course, but the message of holding a citizenship event during the Inauguration of an openly anti-immigrant president rang loud and clear. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend that day.
According to their own website, “since 2011, Project Citizenship has assisted over 16,211 immigrants from 152 countries of origin. 11,122 have applied for citizenship.” To do this, they provide “free, high quality services to legal permanent residents to help them become U.S citizens.” This was the case on January 20th. Dozens of attorneys volunteered their time to assist people in completing and submitting their citizenship applications. It was a powerful thing to witness, especially on such an historic day.
